NEC: our TÜBİTAK 1507 project for a rugged GPS handheld
Sağlamtek’s second TÜBİTAK 1507 project of 2024 develops a durable, low-power and ergonomic GPS handheld that works in passive mode with preloaded maps.

Our NEC (Navigasyon El Cihazı — Navigation Handheld Device) project has been awarded funding from the TÜBİTAK 1507 SME R&D Start-Up Support Programme. It is Sağlamtek’s second project of 2024 supported under the programme.
The goal of the project
The project develops a GPS handheld designed to be durable, low-power and ergonomic. The device works in passive mode, with preloaded maps and basic navigation functions — so the user can navigate without transmitting.
Why a dedicated handheld
Smartphone applications can cover some navigation functions, but the size of the GPS handheld market shows that dedicated devices like NEC remain the preferred choice where specialised features, durability and battery life matter.
Key design targets
- Rugged construction for field use
- Low power consumption for long missions
- Ergonomic, hand-held form factor
- Passive operation with preloaded maps and basic navigation
Timeline
Completion of the project was planned for June 2025, with prototypes produced before that date. NEC builds on the company’s experience in GNSS reception and anti-jam navigation.
